British Telecom (BT) announced today that it is coming out with Bluephone, a handset that will be able to switch seamlessly between 3G, GSM and Wi-Fi networks. Last year I posted an article (Switching between Wi-Fi and cellular networks is here) about Finnish companies that had managed to switch between Wi-Fi and cellular networks while running a game on a British Telecom (BT) announced today that it is coming out with Bluephone, a handset that will be able to switch seamlessly between 3G, GSM and Wi-Fi networks. Last year I posted an article (Switching between Wi-Fi and cellular networks is here) about Finnish companies that had managed to switch between Wi-Fi and cellular networks while running a game on a mobile/Wi-Fi device. I had no idea that such a device would come on the market so quickly and from BT at that (although one has to see whether they really release it).
According to the PR, when the phone detects a Wi-Fi network, it connects automatically but when there is no Wi-Fi, it searches for a 3G networks, falling back on GSM if no 3G is to be found.
There will be a limited rollout in the summer with the full launch taking place later in the year.
