Intel signs WiMAX deal in China: date of delivery unknown

The stream of news about WiMAX bringing wireless broadband to cities continues unabated. This time it appears that Intel has agreed to develop wireless broadband networks for the Chinese cities of Dalian and Chengdu based on WiMAX (source: ZDNet). None of the news reports provided a specific date of delivery or what exactly is being developed. None of the news reports provided a specific date of delivery or what exactly is being developed. As usual “the specific terms of the agreements have not been disclosed”. Nobody every discloses the most important bits.

I may be nitpicking here but those who are not members of this intimate club are left with the impression that WiMAX equipment is already available or at least will be available very soon (as in a couple of months). I might be putting my own spin on these reports but I do get the fallout: every week, I get confused emails from people asking me to recommend vendors that have WiMAX equipment.

The funny thing is that the city of Dalian (pop. 5.9 million) can already deploy a Wi-Fi network to cover their port area, as Amsterdam and several Finnish port cities have done and extend that to the entire city. This isn’t future technology; it’s here and it works. No need to wait for WiMAX. The same applies to Chengdu in southwest China (pop. 10 million).
