Under the three-year deal, which is being announced by Springfield Mayor Timothy Davlin today, AT&T will build a so-called “Wi-Fi” network that will cover a 25-square mile area around the city center. In parts of the city outside- that area, residents and businesses will be able to connect if they have a special antenna on their roofs.
The Springfield city council still has to approve the deal and there are no details yet on pricing and tiers of service (or “tears” of service, depending upon how you look at AT&T).
This will be AT&T’s first successful foray into municipal Wi-Fi. The company is a finalist in the Riverside muni Wi-Fi bid (where it partnered with MetroFi).

There is an Internet Radio company called IP Radio Inc. that is headquartered in Springfield Illinois. They have a handful of stations with live personalities and various formats. Looks like their value just doubled.
