Yesterday, the Board of Commissioners of the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles  (CRA/LA), the public agency charged with revitalizing the city’s downtown, announced $225,000 in contract extensions and enhancements to build out the network to four additional city districts. The service currently provides access in Pershing Square. Plans call for extending it to the financial district and historic core, Bunker Hill and Little Tokyo.
The expansion provides for the installation of additional Wi-Fi equipment through the districts and for enhancing cultural content on the experienceLA.com web site. The web site, launched in 2003, provides information on cultural and entertainment events around Los Angeles, along with information about how to get to them via public transit. It has been recognized as one of the best city guides in the nation,
JoVoGo Communications, which installed equipment for the initial deployment in Pership Square, will buy and install the new WiFi equipment under a $165,000 contract renewal. In addition to enabling Internet access in the districts, the contract calls for the installation of Wi-Fi security cameras in areas of Little Tokyo and Angels Knoll Interim Park.
The network is part of CRA/LA’s efforts to redevelop areas of the city’s downtown and attract new visitors and businesses. According to a CRA/LA press release, the organization expects the expansion of public Wi-Fi to enable new partnerships with the Los Angeles Police Department, the Downtown Business Improvement District, the Historic Core Business Improvement District, and possibly the city’s Department of Transportation.

great job of advertizing the network guys, I know people who live downtown and they didn’t even know we had one. So when will the rest of the city get wifi? I live in south LA, I would pay up to $50 per month for some decent speeds, like 3 up 3 down. As long as I didn’t have to use Comcast or ATT/PacBell.
