Senate bill would increase broadband availability

The bill would require the FCC, within 180 of enactment, to make unused “white spaces” in the broadcast spectrum between 54MHz and 698 MHz available to users without licenses.

We saw essentially the same bill last year when the senator introduced the Wireless Innovation Act of 2006 with Virginia Senator George Allen, a Republican (defeated by Democrat Jim Webb in the last election). Endorsed by the Consumers Union and Free Press, that bill was not acted on by the full Senate.  Free Press was quick to endorse the 2007 bill, yesterday. (Click here to read their press release).

According to a press release from Kerry’s office, the 2007 bill (like the 2006 bill):

will enable entrepreneurs to provide affordable, competitive high-speed wireless broadband services in areas that otherwise have no connectivity to broadband Internet.
