El Paso initiative aims to spur economic development, education

A municipal initiative in El Paso, Texas, involving the city, county, school district and city housing authority has come together to deploy an outdoor wireless mesh network to deliver city applications, provide government efficiencies and offer Internet access to residents and businesses.A municipal initiative in El Paso, Texas, involving the city, county, school district and city housing authority has come together to deploy an outdoor wireless mesh network to deliver city applications, provide government efficiencies and offer Internet access to residents and businesses.

City Manager Joyce Wilson called the project “an important ingredient to our downtown redevelopment efforts, as well as a vehicle to engage an underserved residential community by providing Internet access and connectivity and thus reducing the digital divide that now exists in our lower income neighborhoods.”

Partners in the Digital Communities initiative include Cisco, Intel, Accela and Panasonic. Cisco’s outdoor wireless mesh solution will provide the infrastructure. Intel is funding the digital inclusion and wireless site surveys. Panasonic will provide laptops for field applications and Accela is deploying its land management software for city inspection, permit and code compliance applications. Additionally, the city is evaluating a range of municipal and public safety applications to streamline operations and reduce costs and further El Paso.

The network will cover public areas, as well as parks, buildings and residences.
