FCC classifies wireless broadband as an information service; MAP responds

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has classified wireless broadband Internet access service as an information service under the Communications Act (Act). The FCC’s action places wireless broadband Internet access service on the same regulatory footing as other broadband services, such as cable modem service, wireline broadband (DSL) Internet access service, and Broadband over Power Line (BPL)-enabled Internet access service.

The city of Ipoh in Malaysia’s Perak state officially launched its Wi-Fi network this week.The city of Ipoh in Malaysia’s Perak state officially launched its Wi-Fi network this week.

The network was built by Red Snapper, a Malaysian provider of voice over Wi-Fi services, using Altai Technologies’ Wi-Fi cellular base stations.
