March 2007 update of wireless cities and counties in the US

Here is the latest (31 March 2007) update of the list of US cities and counties with wireless networks (as well as those with networks in deployment or planning stages). Download the PDF from here. As of 31 March 2007, there were 340 cities and counties in the US in the deployment / planning phase and with networks up and running. If you add the number of cities and counties that are seriously considering municipal Wi-Fi, that number rises to 389.

    Colorado Wireless Communities (Arvada, Boulder, Broomfield, Louisville, Superior, Lakewood, Northglenn, Thornton, Wheat Ridge, Golden)issued an RFP for a regional wireless network in January. Responses are due back April 13.

    UPDATE — Scottsdale, AZ

    Please update your records for the city of Scottsdale. The WiFi network installed and operated by WildFire Wireless Broadband in a 2 sq. mile section in the downtown has been operational for a year. There are no plans at this time for a citywide deployment.

    The Cities of Coldwater, Union City, Bronson, Quincy and Tekonsha Michigan should be added to your list. They are operated by The Coldwater Board of Public Utilities who also owns and operates a hybrid fiber coax system for the City of Coldwater. They have been in business for approximately 10 years now.

    We have an City-Owned free 11 radio network that will celebrate its third anniversary in August.

    Spotsylvania County, Virginia has set-up a free Wireless hotspot in the Courthouse area.

    The County is also working with the Chamber of Commerce to establish free wireless hotspots in commercial areas around our I95 interchanges.

    You’ve got Fresno listed under public safety and municipal use, while we have most governmental buildings and all Fire and Police covered, we also have WiFi in the area. Our downtown Sportstown area (stadium area) and our major parks buildings (parks labs) have free public WiFi access. We are currently investigating citywide coverage.

    Anyone want to cover California’s 6th largest City?

    We have more cities in KY that enjoy the capabilities of wireless networks. I will get a summary of those communities for you to include.

    Anchorage received 6 responses to it’s RFP. It is in negotiation with one vendor
