Wireless goes to court

If you’ve ever been called for jury duty, I expect your experience has been like mine‚Äö?Ñ?Æspending many non-productive hours in a large assembly room before you’re ever even called as a juror.

The city of Phoenix is changing that scenario, turning the jury assembly room for municipal court into a wireless hot spot. Now persons can do their civic duty without being out of touch with their offices as they wait to be called for a trial.

I have to wonder why more court offices are not doing this. The inability of professional people to be away from their offices for long periods during jury duty is a serious problem in the American legal system. My lawyer friends frequently complain that only the unemployed and retired seem to be available for jury duty and it is becoming increasingly difficult to impanel a cross-section of the community.

This hot spot doesn’t solve the problem but it should go a long way to accommodating those who cannot afford to be away from their offices.
