Pune, India, is deploying a 400 square-kilometer municipal wireless network using WiMAX and Wi-Fi technology.Pune, India, is deploying a 400 square-kilometer municipal wireless network using WiMAX and Wi-Fi technology.

The project, called Unwiring Pune, already covers Sambhaji Park and an area around the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) headquarters. Intel is building the network which is expected to be complete next year. Microsense, based in Chennai, will operate it.

Municipal Commissioner Nitin Kareer said the network is designed to provide Internet access to Pune residents at affordable rates.
