The Nokia N95 reviewed; UK carriers stripping Internet phone features

I wanted to wait until I got a chance to play with the N95 and post my review on Muniwireless, but this weekend, Om Malik posted a thorough review on his blog and I thought I would share it with you. Om Malik spent several days playing with the N95. He raves about the 5-megapixel camera, video and music-playing functions, integrated VOIP and Wi-Fi features. Yet he decided not to get the phone because of the battery life and lack of Mail for Exchange Support. Read the full review here. The phone looks beautiful – it has a wide screen which makes web browsing a pleasurable experience.

I currently have the Nokia N80i and will be posting my own review of the N95 when I get it. I don’t use Mail for Exchange and my own way of dealing with battery life on the N80i is to turn off the Wi-Fi sniffer when I’m not using Gizmo Project (for voice over Wi-Fi calls) or Gmail.

A warning to UK residents: Darla Mack reports that several UK cellular carriers are castrating the phone. They are removing the Internet phone features. Read also Andy Abramson’s post.

If you buy a phone subsidized by a carrier, you can expect them to remove features that allow you to circumvent their network. It’s better to buy a phone unlocked from a Nokia store, Carphone Warehouse or some other retailer to give yourself the freedom to call whichever way you want.

The Nokia N95 costs 599 UK pounds including VAT if you purchase it from the Nokia UK online shop. In the US, the phone costs $750.

One Response to The Nokia N95 reviewed; UK carriers stripping Internet phone features

Nice review of the Nokia N95. I’ve heard you mention your usage of this Gizmo Project App for making free VoIP calls throughout your travels, but they unfortunetly don’t support the OS that my (and many other) portable WiFi device use. that being, the ever popular Windows Mobile 5 (or now 6). Is anyone aware of a simular VoIP app that is supported by WM5 or WM6? Thanks!
