Study highlights big wireless growth potential

A new report, released this week, shows that dial-up is declining, wired broadband is peaking and the future path to the Internet is wireless.The Face of the Web study, conducted annually by Ipsos Insight, shows growth potential for wireless broadband connections. A summary of the study on EETimes quotes Brian Cruikshank, executive VP and managing director of Technology and Communications for Ipsos Insight, as saying that municipal Wi-Fi and WiMAX network will attract new users to the Internet and “the implications from a content and overall online experience are profound.”

According to the EETimes report, the study found:

Only 15% of Internet users connect with wireless devices today, but the growth of household laptop ownership (34%) and the growing popularity of mobile browsing could change that‚Äö?Ѭ?One in three adults had accessed the Internet through mobile devices by the end of 2006‚Äö?Ѭ?Developing nations lacking a wired infrastructure are also likely also feed demand for wireless as they try to leap-frog countries with tethered connections.
