The Bill is now before the state Senate. It is the centerpiece of Gov. Jim Douglas’s e-state initiative to provide ubiquitous broadband coverage across his state by 2010.

House Speaker Gaye Symington and Senate Pro Tem Peter Shumlin, gave an update on legislative initiatives earlier this week. According to a report in the Vermont Times-Argus:

A goal that is heartily endorsed by business, statewide, high-speed and cell service is an issue of critical economic importance. The nation has turned the corner from the time when availability of these services was an advantage to the point where lack of them is a serious disadvantage. Legislators and Gov. Douglas’ administration speak with one voice on the pressing need to reach all corners of the state as soon as possible.
