Time Warner’s 6.6 million high speed data subscribers will be able to turn their home or office broadband connections into FON access points and receive free WiFi service from FON’s partner ISPs.FON claims it is the largest Wi-Fi network in the U.S. with 60,000 members. Members turn their access points into hot-spots that utilize their unused
bandwidth and receive free WiFi access anywhere in the world by connecting through other FON access points. We, and others, have written about FON’s curious business model which relies on subscribers’ willingness to violate the policies of many ISPs forbidding subscribers to shard bandwidth. However, by partnering directly with ISPs instead of recruiting their subscribers, it seems FON is onto a business model that avoids that conflict.
