St. Louis Park in Minnesota hoped to be the first city in the U.S. to deploy a municipal wireless network powered solely by the sun. Energy efficient? Yes. But residents said “no.”St. Louis Park in Minnesota hoped to be the first city in the U.S. to deploy a municipal wireless network powered solely by the sun. But residents are not happy with the big silver solar panels handing on city street poles and the city has pushed back the deployment until it can meet with residents to identify a mutually agreeable solution.
The city planned to install one panel for each of the 400 nodes in its mesh. According to a story in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the project will be delayed by about six weeks as city officials meet with residents to discuss “the look and placement of the poles.”
Even with the delay, service is expected to be online in October.
Jim Geier addressed aesthetics in a January post on the problems municipalities face when mounting nodes. Click here to read his recommendations.
