Clovis, Calif., is eager to deploy a municipal network. It is negotiating with MetroFi to provide free Wi-Fi Internet access to all residents, has a back-up vendor if those talks fail, and is also considering building the network itself.Clovis, Calif., is negotiating with MetroFi to provide free Wi-Fi Internet access to all its residents.

The city council authorized the talks in April and evidently is eager to get to its goal. The council has already approved approaching Azulstar, working with Tropos Networks, as a back-up if the MetroFi talks fail and would also consider building the network itself.

The talks are part of an overall initiative to attract high tech industry to the area. According to a story in the Fresno Bee, the plan is to extend excess capacity in a partially-built network for the city’s public safety personnel to the city’s 92,000 residents.
