Hongkong to provide Wi-Fi access to the public in government spaces

The Hongkong Legislative Council has approved a plan to make free Internet access available via Wi-Fi in government spaces. They will start with libraries and community centers and hope to expand wireless access throughout the city.Hongkong will be setting up Wi-Fi networks in 350 government-owned spaces and allowing residents to access the Internet for free in those areas. They want the city to have full wireless coverage but according to this report, they will do this together with the private sector.

In Asia, a number of large cities, such as Singapore, have already announced plans to deploy wide-area Wi-Fi networks. So far only Taipei’s network is up and running.
