And recent reports on the quality of service look good. Dwight Silverman, a Houston Chronicle reporter who’s been covering the progress of the network, as well as Houston’s own proposed 640-square-mile project with EarthLink, had a blog item this week reporting the signal was much stronger than what he got earlier this year.

The city, which originally built the network for public safety purposes, sold it to EarthLink in March. Since then EarthLink has added antennas, often more than 30 per square mile, to heighten performance.

Corpus Christi residents will be offered a $6.95 monthly household rate for the first six months of service, rising to $19.99 in the seventh month and those who sign yearly contracts will receive a wireless signal booster for indoor service at no extra charge.

Is that added “often more than 30 per square mile” or added access points to bring the total up to 30 per square mile? EarthLink has told me in the past, they expect to deploy 30 to 35 nodes per square mile.
