Low-income city residents began receiving free computers and Internet service last month and 95 more are expected to be distributed before fall.

The distribution is being managed as part of a welfare-to-work program financed through The Philadelphia Workforce Development Corporation. The corporation is paying the $600 cost of the bundle, plus training in how to use it. The five women who received the bundles last month qualified by holding jobs for one year.

Wireless Philadelphia expects to deliver 500 bundles by the end of the year and is seeking non-profit partners to assist in distributing thousands more over the coming years.

Meanwhile, EarthLink continues the build-out of city-wide wireless in Philadelphia. It has unwired 35 of the 135 square miles in the city.
