One of the votes was on the San Francisco Neighborhood Antenna-Free Union’s appeal of a city Planning Commission decision to exempt the network from an environmental review. The group claims placing Wi-Fi access points on light poles could harm residents’ health. This recalls the litany of other so-called environmental concerns about new technologies–from getting cancer by sitting too near a television set to rumors of brain tumors caused by cell phones.
The more pressing issue is privacy, specifically EarthLink and Google’s ability to collect information on users’ surfing habits. The second vote, from the board’s Budget and Finance Committee, is needed before the contract can move ahead for approval. Board President Aaron Peskin drew up a series of amendments to the contract, which has been pending since January.
