Carroll and his research group at Penn State are finding good things in their investigation of the social impact of muni wireless.

Carroll’s group at Penn State’s Center for Human-Computer Interaction has embarked on a three-year investigation into citizens’ hopes, expectations, and concerns about muni wireless projects. The research, sponsored by Intel Corp. and the Knight Foundation, is happening in paralell with the borough of State College’s exploration of a municipal wireless network that could interoperate with Penn State’s campus wireless network.

The column was a nice change of pace from all the hand-wringing over muni wireless business models we’ve seen in the press since EarthLink announced plans to change its direction in the muni market.

As I mentioned a while back, EarthLink’s difficulties should not be confused with muni wireless. Business models represent the means to an end. They are not the end itself. When we lose sight of the vision–which many in the press have–we risk geting stuck on the bumps in the road. It’s nice to read a column that moves beyond that and tells what’s possible and attainable.
