Well finally someone thought about it: free Wi-Fi for train passengers. British Rail has decided to offer free wireless broadband access to lure passengers to its rail services between London and Scotland. They compete against private rail operators like Arriva and Virgin Trains. Well finally someone thought about it: free Wi-Fi for train passengers between London and Scotland. British Rail is taking over GNER’s London-Scotland line, which has been offering free Wi-Fi to first class passengers. GNER charges ¬¨¬£4.95 per hour in standard, so I guess this fee will be dropped by British Rail.
To maintain a connection while traveling, the trains use a combination of 3G-GPRS-satellite broadband and Wi-Fi.
I am delighted to see initiatives such as this from railway operators. If they make it easier for people to do their work while traveling (online access is key), they can compete with airlines and cars. The effect on the environment and lifestyle is significant: less pollution, fewer traffic jams, less stress.
