The province is making a concerted effort to assist communities in building out broadband infrastructures to bring high-speed Internet access to its remote areas to foster economic development. This distribution is from the Ontario budget allocation that we reported in June.

Peterborough County’s project appears to be the most ambitious, based on its application for funding. The county has already inested $1 million to construct 11 of what will be 18 towers to serve 90 percent of the county’s population. The county is partnering with local telco, Nexicom, on the project which appears to be targeted to providing broadband via a cellular data network.
