I asked Greg Richardson at Civitium about lessons learned from other city involvements that might be applied in Los Angeles. He deferred comment to LA city officials but shared general observations about the future of the muni market. Here's what he had to say:

"We’ve preferred to sit out the intense opining and speculating of the past couple of weeks, with a view that time does indeed allow for deeper perspective.

Despite the attention-grabbing headlines following EarthLink’s decision to re-evaluate its direction, we have seen no decrease in enthusiasm or resolve across our client-base. With respect to major cities, their actions have demonstrated a continued commitment to the policy goals they established. Just as EarthLink chose to re-evaluate its strategies and tactics to align better with its business objectives, so too are major cities re-evaluating theirs.

And there are many paths left to explore; new opportunities to innovate. New market dynamics; new players; new successes and failures to learn from; new technologies; new business models. While some may view this necessary market-correction with cynicism, we view it with great excitement, and so do our clients.”
