Infocis (Interactive Network of the Fox Cities), a consortium of seven municipalities, including Appleton, is overseeing the deployment and is expected to hire a consultant within the next few weeks. Infocis has been working to enhance connectivity in the region since 2000 when it installed a 40-mile fiber optic communications network.

The network is expected to be in operation by next summer. Initially, it will be used by city, county and school employees to gain remote access into their departments’ internal network. But, according to Scott Liske, Appleton’s director of technology services, “we’re building it with the hope and plan that this will become something that is available, probably on a subscription basis, to citizens who want to buy wireless Internet service.”
