Evidence mounts that the action in muni wireless is moving to applications. TechData, one of the largest distributors of computing equipment in the U.S., has launched a new Wireless Specialized Business Unit focused on both indoor and outdoor deployments and a new study predicts sales of wireless public safety equipment are poised to skyrocket.TechData one of the largest distributors of computing equipment in the U.S., has launched a new Wireless Specialized Business Unit focused on both indoor and outdoor deployments.
TechData has traditionally pursued the governmental market with service and equipment offerings, as well as consultative services, aimed at helping cities, states and regional agencies. This new unit seems poised to strengthen its governmental offering with services aimed squarely at the public wireless market. According to a report in the Tampa Bay Business Journal, “the new unit will play a role in municipal wireless services.”
This is further evidence that, in these months following EarthLink’s restructuring and offering free wireless consumer services is difficult at best, the market remains strong for wireless applications that pack cost-saving efficiencies and improved city services.
A recent study called “US Public Safety: The New Era of Wireless Networks” from the New York-based research group, Visant Strategies, reports that the public safety sector is especially active. Revenues from sales of land-based mobile digital radios are expected to reach about $100 million in 2007 and rise to $450 million in 2012.
