The police department of Logan, Ohio, is unwiring public safety vehicles. Computer devices in cruisers will now be able to exchange data communications wirelessly with central offices and other vehicles.The police department in Logan, Ohio, is equipping cruisers with a wireless communications to access identification records from the field. The system ties into Ohio LEADS, a database of driver and vehicle information, and OHLeg, a criminal database. It will allow officers to access the databases to check identification without resorting to radios.
It also will enable officers to communicate with other officers in the field without having to use radios. This could boost the department’s crime-fighting capabilities by foiling those who monitor police radio scanners to track the whereabouts of officers.
