New Jersey law protects community rights to muni wireless
It’s official. A new state law in New Jersey lets communities provide wireless Internet service to local citizens as a public service or through private-public partnerships. The law, signed last week by Gov. Jon Corzine, puts the state’s stamp of approval on what was already happening across the state.
Trenton has been pursuing plans to launch wireless Internet service.
Camden and Gloucester Counties have already embarked on an initiative that would engage a private partner. A muni network has been operating in Elizabeth since January. Ocean City intends to start service for residents and visitors in that beachfront community. And other initiatives are underway in the towns of Summitt and Somerville.
In a news release announcing the new law, Assembly Speaker Joseph J. Roberts Jr., said “Universal Internet access has wide educational, economic and communal benefits. There is no reason wireless networks should be limited to certain homes and businesses.”
