Gainesville municipal utility issues RFP for wireless network
Gainesville Regional Utility, a public utility owned by the city of Gainesville, Florida has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for a wireless network that will be used for traffic synchronization, public safety and public Internet access. Gainesville Regional Utility (GRU), a municipal utility owned by the City of Gainesville, FL, has released an RFP for a wireless network that will be used for the following applications:
Traffic synchronization: Gainesville will acquire 200 IP-based traffic signal controllers (Models 980 and 981) from Naztec. GRU wants to use the wireless network to support these controllers. The city will also install video cameras at 47 locations for traffic surveillance.
Public safety: GRU wants to provide mobile data access to 11 public agencies including University of Florida police, County sheriff, City police and other agencies.
Public access): GRU would like to offer access to the wireless network to unaffiliated ISPs to provide Internet access to residents, students and businesses along the streets and in the neighborhoods and commercial districts that are adjacent to the traffic signal network.
The utility will own the network, and the city has budgeted $3-4 million to cover the costs.
