Eliot Spitzer launches an initiative to deploy high-speed Internet access across his state, it appears that some rural counties are already making serious moves to make inexpensive broadband access a reality in their regions.
The Plattsburgh Press-Republican has an interesting article on how the initiative will be implemented in a three-county area surrounding Plattsburg–Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties–where a local initiative, CBN Connect, has already taken steps to lay 500 miles of fiber optic cable.
The paper based its report on an interview with Howard Lowe, director of the Technical Assistance Center at Plattsburgh State University and a member of the governor’s New York State Council for Universal Broadband which is overseeing the statewide deployment.
CBN finished a needs analysis in October and is now working on a technical design exploring plans for implementation, including the possibility of sharing fiber-optic lines already in place and how new lines might be installed on power poles in the region.
The article details prospects for funding and previews a plan in which the network would be supported by two hubs to provide redundancy in case one would be disabled.
