WiMAX has come to France’s Normandy coastline, bringing broadband access to almost all of the residents of Seine Maritime, the administrative department of the region.

Broadband has not been available in many areas of the region which fronts the English Channel. Thirty-five WiMAX base stations and 73 antennas were deployed to bring service to about 14,000 homes and municipal buildings.

The service is expected to provide speeds of up to 1 Mbps. This is not an impressive speed but it’s, of course, better than nothing and it’s expected to make a big difference to the many cottage industries in the coastal rural region. Pricing has not been announced.
