OpenAir Boston Nears Initial Project Landmark

OpenAir Boston, the non-profit corporation set up to direct and manage Boston’s wireless initiative, is closing in on the completion of the project’s initial pilot. Located in Roxbury’s Grove Hall neighborhood, the initial deployment utilizes about 60 BelAir Networks radios to cover a little more than 1.2 square miles, according to Pam Reeve, the non-profit’s CEO. Reeve says her organization has focused almost entirely on constructing, testing and tweaking the initial pilot, with hopes of officially going live within the next 30 days. Once that phase is deemed a success, Reeve says they will begin expanding the network to other areas and move into a more sustained effort to line up outside investors, including partnerships with Boston’s university and business communities.
