Annapolis readies wireless for public safety

Annapolis, Maryland, is taking the first step in a plan to bring wireless broadband to the city. The city recently contracted with Tele-Tector of Maryland, a local integrator focusing on security applications, to deploy an initial pilot for video surveillance. Annapolis IT manager Paul Thorn says the city eventually intends to expand the wireless network’s applications to include voice and other public safety uses, and potentially even support for public works, water plant monitoring and mobile workers. Thorn says the pilot, funded by a grant from the Department of Homeland Security, should be ready to go in March, expanding to the entire city for video surveillance by the summer. No decision has been reached yet on the infrastructure technology, which could embrace a combination of WiFi, WiMAX and microwave. Consulting firm Columbia Telecommunications Corp. has been working with Thorn and Annapolis city officials to develop the comprehensive broadband strategy.
