Philadelphia eyes life after EarthLink

Philadelphia is making contingency plans for an EarthLink bailout from the city’s metro Wi-Fi network. Terry Phillis, the city’s CIO, told ComputerWorld this week that he believed there was a 75 percent chance EarthLink would sell or abandon the network. The city expects an answer within 60 days but is already preparing for that eventuality.

According to Phillis, the city considers the network “an asset for the city. Our priority is to get it completed, to service the digital divide, to enhance tourism and to serve mobile city workers.”

A sale to another private provider would be preferable to the city operating the network on its own but Philadelphia is evidently keeping its options open. The city has begun trials to see if it is practical for use with city inspections and emergency services.
