Minneapolis’ Digital Inclusion Fund awarded a total of $200,000 in nine grants to local organizations in an effort to address the digital divide in that city. The fund, which is managed by the Minneapolis Foundation, was created last year under the terms of a contract with US Internet Wireless, provider of Minneapolis’ city-wide Wi-Fi network.
The contract calls for USI to provide $500,000 to the fund to provide technical resources and training to qualified families and for USI to “direct a minimum of five percent of the network’s net profits to a digital inclusion fund for ongoing digital inclusion efforts.” The remaining $300,000 is to be donated when the network is complete and the fund could potentially receive as much $11 million during the 10-year term of the contract.
