Anderson, Indiana’s city-owned Municipal Light and Power Utility expects to realize a net savings of $18.7 million over 15 years as a result of its ability to monitor water and electrical usage via its automated meter reading (AMR) wireless network.
The city has been able to significantly reduce costs associated with the inaccuracies of manual meter reading while, at the same time, improving overall customer satisfaction. Improved meter reading is resulting in more accurate bills and the ability to immediately detect electrical outages, pinpoint the areas that are affected and quickly restore service.
A news release about the system quotes Darren Grile, network administrator for Anderson Municipal Light and Power, saying “We decided to implement a wireless AMR solution to eliminate the inaccuracies and lost costs of manual meter reading. We began to see almost immediate financial benefits as soon as we replaced the meters and also tremendously improved our customer service.”

Here’s hoping that Minneapolis (MN) picks up on this. I have not had a POTS line for years. The solution in Minneapolis is to have someone *drive* around and take readings wirelessly. (As opposed to the default method where your meter is plugged into your POTS and does a ‘phone home’)
Granted, retooling is spendy, but you would think the saving would add up.
would a high pressure home of atleast 90psi cause a residence with a leak at 10gals per min to over register the leak causing a $5,000 water bill for a month? thanks, Deanna
