Wi-Fi on public transport used to be a novelty, not anymore. A number of bus companies in the UK are providing free Wi-Fi to their passengers (see Glasgow, London, Reading (UK)). Now, the city of Tallahassee, Florida wants to encourage commuters to use public transport by offering free Wi-Fi. The cost to the city: a one time fee of $20,700 for purchase and installation, $12,580 in the first year and $10,800 annually thereafter. The rise in public transport Wi-Fi has to do with cheaper and more widely available 3G backhaul, and affordable nodes that “convert” 3G signals to Wi-Fi so that passengers with Wi-Fi devices such as iPhones and laptops, can simply get Internet access.
