Clearwire adds 48,000 subscribers in Q1

The “old” Clearwire announced first-quarter financials Monday, and seemed to get a good jump on its 2008 plans with a net gain of 48,000 new subscribers for the company’s WiMax services. Back in January Clearwire had given guidance of expecting to add between 110,000 to 130,000 new subscribers over the entire year, so to get 48K in the first three months seems to be a positive start.

EarthLink notifies Philly subscribers of network shutdown

EarthLink has notified subscribers in Philadelphia that it will discontinue its citywide wireless broadband service on June 12, 2008 (see press release). The company claims that it has failed to reach any agreement with the city for the transfer of the network either to the city or to another service provider. Wireless Philadelphia, the organization in charge of the project, has no comment (officially) but maintains that EarthLink does not have the unilateral right to take down the wireless access…

City of Shanghai extends wireless broadband coverage to various neighborhoods

Shanghai is rolling out wireless broadband service in partnership with Shanghai Telecom in various areas of the city. You can access the network at Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall in Huangpu District for 85 US cents per minute (which works out to about $25 for 30 minutes, very expensive).
