City of Shanghai extends wireless broadband coverage to various neighborhoods

Shanghai is rolling out wireless broadband service in partnership with Shanghai Telecom in various areas of the city. You can access the network at Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall in Huangpu District for 85 US cents per minute (which works out to about $25 for 30 minutes, very expensive).

The plan is to extend network coverage to Beijing Road Hardware Street, Yu Garden Commercial Area and Xizhang Road Commercial Area. The article says that Jiading District established a wireless network in its downtown (40 square kilometers) early this month and that people in Jiading Township, Xincheng Neighborhood and Maoqiao Village can access the network already. Shanghai wants to have citywide wireless broadband network by 2010

It’s a very challenging project since Shanghai is a very large city. Access at these prices is expensive and out of reach of the average Shanghai resident. But if they use it to bring access inside homes, then it could be a replacement for wired broadband.
