T-Mobile Netherlands unveils 3G iPhone pricing, offers only 2-year contracts

T-Mobile Netherlands has finally announced the prices it will charge for the 3G iPhone (and subscriptions) in the Netherlands. Be warned: you have to sign up for a 2-year contract. I dislike these long contracts that mobile operators force people to sign.

No wonder MVNOs such as Blyk are attracting a lot of young people who hate long contracts with cancellation penalties. I think this is the wave of the future. And why doesn’t have a 1-year option for the iPhone?

(1) 29.95 EUR per month includes:
150 minutes
150 text messages
8GB iPhone price: 79.95 EUR
16 GB iphone price: 159.95 EUR

(2) 44.95 EUR per month includes:
300 minutes
300 text messages
8GB iPhone price: 1 EUR
16GB iPhone price: 79.97 EUR

(3) 64.95 EUR per month includes:
500 minutes
500 text messages
8GB iPhone price: 1 EUR
16 GB iPhone price: 19.95 EUR

Now comes a warning about their “unlimited”, “flat-rate” data plans: T-Mobile will charge you extra for data use outside the Netherlands, for the use of T-Mobile hotspots outside the country, and Visual Voicemail abroad.

Given that the Netherlands is a very small country, this is a terrible deal. You drive an hour, you’re in Antwerp (Belgium) and all of a sudden, wham! You’re paying massive data roaming fees.

Another limitation: although the download speed is up to 2 Mbps, the upload speed is pathetic: 384 Kbps.
