Broward County non-profit issues RFP for community-owned broadband network
OneBroward. a non-profit organization, has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a community-owned wired and wireless broadband network covering 500 square miles (1300 square kilometers) of Broward County, Florida. The goal of the project is to provide broadband Internet access to residents, improve public safety and law enforcement, as well as efficiency in local government services, provide access to underserved communities and establish an entrepreneurial friendly environment that promotes economic development.
OneBroward consists of the following eight organizations: Broward College, Broward County Government, Broward County Schools, Broward Health, Broward Sheriff’s Office, Florida Atlantic University, Memorial Hospital District, and Nova Southeastern University.
The RFP, put together with the assistance of the Beta Strategy Group (BSG) from Ohio, was based in part on responses to the OneBroward Request For Information (RFI) in March 2008 from, among others, ATT, Cisco, IBM, Nortel, Motorola, and Northrop Grumman. OneBroward is led by Dr. Phyllis Schiffer-Simon, the Director of the Broward Education Communications Network (BECON).
