Chris -- Proxim’s MeshMAX products bridge the connection between WiMAX and Wi-Fi. MeshMAX is a tri-radio, outdoor device offering Wi-Fi connectivity for access, Wi-Fi mesh gateway for network redundancy and a high capacity, carrier-class WiMAX link for backhaul. If you need more information on the product, you can view the product page here: http://www.proxim.com/products/meshmax/index.html, or you can reach out to me directly at rhenshaw at proxim dot com.

Um, the portable router is just one of many options... I thought they generally have a lot of ways to connect, especially if you compare it to 3G options. For Portland there is already a home modem, USB card, embedded notebooks/netbooks... plus different pricing models for businesses, consumers... so how will having one portable router fail?

You could always hire a butler to drag your WiMAX modem around town as you drive or walk. There are a lot of unemployed people right now who would gladly do this for you. What shall we call this innovative service - the WiMAX Butler?

Dumb, dumb, dumb. This strategy will fail. Clearwire's target market for early adoption is not suburban families. I would have hoped that they understood that. This guy smells of seat-of-the-pants decisions combined with procrastination.

I am a Clearwire customer. I am the "early adopter" that always gets screwed but keeps coming back. I would have bought a Nokia N810 (had they not been discontinued due to Clearwire's refusal to sell them). There is no way in hell I am going to carry that kludge of a "solution" around in my pocket. Disappointing. Here's hoping they didn't pull the plug on the WiMax version of the MSI Wind that is due any day.

This reminds me of Joikuspot and Walking Hotspot, two applications that turn your 3G phone into a WiFi access point so your friends and colleagues can simply use WiFi (via 3G) to connect their laptops and other WiFi devices to the Internet.

Check out this post I wrote some time ago:
