WiMAX service launches in available in Tokyo, Yokohama and Kawasaki
Bring out the bubbly! I just added three green dots to my global map of mobile WiMAX service and two yellow dots. UQ Communications, a Japanese WiMAX operator, is offering WiMAX service in Tokyo, Yokohama and Kawasaki. From the end of February until June 2009, customers will be given free access. After that, UQ will charge 4480 yen per month ($50) with a sign-up fee of 2835 yen ($30). Users sign up for a month to month contract. However, unlike the Aerea service in Amsterdam, they don’t offer visitors an hourly or daily subscription. By the end of June 2009, residents of Nagoya and Osaka will be able to sign up for WiMAX service. UQ Communications is a joint venture among KDDI (which owns one third of the company), Intel Capital (17.65%), Kyocera (17.65%) and East Japan Railway (17.65%), Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and Daiwa Securities.
UQ is also offering free Wi-Fi on the high-speed trains between Tokyo and Osaka.
