Texas charter bus operator offers Wi-Fi to passengers
A Texas charter bus operator will be offering Wi-Fi access to passengers starting this summer. Executive Coach, the largest privately owned charter company in Texas, has signed a deal with Icomera, a vendor of Wi-Fi access points and gateways that use 3G/HSPA, EV-DO or WiMAX as backhaul. Executive Coach’s buses will be using Sprint’s EV-DO Rev A network as backhaul. The company hired SinglePoint Communications (based in Portland, Oregon) to install the network.
Executive Coach has over 120 buses that accommodate between 45 and 60 people. Wi-Fi access is only one of the applications that transport companies use when they purchase Icomera’s gateways. The other applications are CCTV, real-time vehicle tracking (using GPS).
“We are delighted that Executive Coach has chosen the Moovbox for their Internet requirements,” said Dave Palmer, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales at Icomera. “With over 5,000 charter bus companies generating in excess of $2.3 billion in revenues in 2008, the North American charter bus market presents a significant opportunity for Icomera and our Channel Partners such as SinglePoint. Executive Coach is setting the pace by delivering cutting-edge facilities to their passengers while planning for future services that can leverage real-time Internet connectivity.”
Public transport companies are now installing Wi-Fi access points in their buses and trains to bring in more passengers. If you can do some work and email on a train or bus, reduce your commuting time and save money, driving yourself to work becomes much less attractive. Most of the public transport companies offer Wi-Fi service for free, but because it’s very popular, they have had to add more capacity to the network by adding another access point or buying more backhaul from the carrier (for example, in the UK, many bus and train operators get 3G/HSPA backhaul from Vodafone).
