Apple reports 15 percent increase in quarterly profit and record iPhone sales

Apple defied the economic crisis and reported $8.34 billion in sales and a net profit of $1.23 billion for its (fiscal) 3rd quarter. The numbers represent a 15% increase in quarterly profit. Indeed the company stated that it cannot meet the demand for iPhones and Macs. Apple sold 5.2 million iPhones in the last quarter, a figure that is 7 times what it sold the year before. iPhones are also doing well in the enterprise. Apple says that close to 20% of Fortune 100 firms have bought at least 10,000 iPhones or more. So much for the “conventional wisdom” that Apple never does well in the enterprise.

As for the iPod Touch (sometimes called the poor man’s iPhone), Apple’s CFO Peter Oppenheimer says that the iPod touch did very well in the last quarter with sales growing more than 130 percent compared to a year ago.

I have not bought myself an iPhone because I don’t think AT&T’s network is worth the price. Here in San Francisco, all you get at the Ferry Building (off the Embarcadero) two blocks from the Financial District, is the slow EDGE network. In many parts of the city, all you get is EDGE, not 3G. Try browsing web pages and viewing video clips on EDGE. It’s awful.

So I stick to my prepaid T-Mobile card for voice calls (using a Nokia phone) and I use the iPod Touch when I am in the vicinity of a Wi-Fi network. This works extremely well for me and saves money.
