Will AT&T network crash when it launches MMS on Friday?

AT&T is finally launching multimedia messaging service (MMS) on the iPhone tomorrow. That’s a welcome announcement for some iPhone users, but many fear that the added data traffic will cause even more breakdowns in the network. Customers of AT&T have been critical about the operator’s poor cellular service which has been suffering from the success of the iPhone.

Recently, the FCC has proposed rules that would make it more difficult for service providers, including wireless operators, to discriminate against certain types of applications and require them to disclose their network management practices. The cellular operators warned that interfering with their network management practices will be disastrous for the quality of service on their networks. Advocates of net neutrality argue that operators are not making sufficient investments in upgrading their networks and are using discriminatory practices to “milk” their existing networks and prevent innovative applications from reaching customers. I can see both sides of the argument, but I agree with the FCC Chairman that network practices should be more transparent.

I was in an IEEE meeting hosted by Cisco and AT&T yesterday, TRANSFORMING NEXT GENERATION IP NETWORKS INTO ’MEDIANETS’. There was a lot talk how to separately route media applications, but I doubt if all this network equipment has been put in yet. I bet crash.
