NTIA, RUS to award grants in December 2009

The NTIA and RUS have extended the review of grant applications to December 2009, one month later than earlier announced. The first round of funding of the Broadband Technology Opportunity Program and the Broadband Initiative Program has generated thousands of applications. Lawrence Strickling, Assistant Secretary for Communications and Information at NTIA, says that they need more time to review the applications and that the first grants will be announced most likely in the middle of December.

There will be a second round of funding, which will begin in February 2010. The agencies also plan to issue a Request for Information (“RFI”) to determine the procedures for the next round of funding.
