At Cloud 9 Wireless, we helped manage those WiFi sponsorship campaigns for Google mentioned here and would love to see the extend into the transit space as well. We are in the midst of a campaign sponsoring free WiFi on all Virgin Trains in the UK

One of the problems though is that the connection density is still quite low on all for short journeys such as those served by municipal buses and light rail. Also, it's somewhat harder to deliver a quality add over the cellular backhaul used by companies like Icomera. Still, we anticipate this space will heat up in 2011.

This model already works for web sites, so why not with free wi-fi? If it helps public transit, then that is a win-win for everyone. I remember using an AT&T hot spot in an airport that was free (to me being at AT&T subscriber) and it had ads. It was easy to use, the ads weren't intrusive, and did I mentioned it was free!

What a great idea! I would gladly deal with a few ads for FREE Wi-Fi, especially on public transit.
