Makati, Philippines to offer citywide WiFi service

Makati City in the Philippines is working with Philippine Long Distance and Telephone (PLDT) to bring citywide WiFi to residents and visitors. Details are sketchy but it appears that Makati is working with PLDT which already has subscription-based Wi-Fi service around metro Manila and in other cities in the Philippines. The network will use Makati’s extensive fiber ring. When I visited Makati last February, I noted that there was a lot of free Wi-Fi in the high-end shopping malls and restaurants. Makati is the poshest district of metro Manila. Even Trump is building what will be the most luxurious condominium tower (in the Philippines) in Makati.

Filipinos are avid users of smartphones and social media. Over 28 million Filipinos are on Facebook (about 28 percent of the population), making it the 8th top Facebook-using country in the world. Of the Filipinos who have Internet access, 95 percent have Facebook accounts.
