S. Carolina legislators push for state-wide wireless
South Carolina legislators are considering a bill that would create a state Wireless Technology and Communications Commission to deploy border-to-border wireless broadband access.South Carolina legislators are considering a bill that would create a state Wireless Technology and Communications Commission to deploy border-to-border wireless broadband access.
The state already owns infrastructure, including cell towers and spectrum. The proposed commission would explore public-private partnerships to evaluate the feasibility of deploying and operating the proposed network.
Greenville Rep. Dwight Loftis who co-authored the bill claims that, if the network is implemented, the state would be the first to provide border-to-border wireless broadband Internet.Perhaps, but South Carolina is hardly alone in that race. Vermont and Rhode Island have significant leads. And really, does it matter which state hits the borders first with so many initiatives underway? The real winners are the local citizens and businesses who get good service at good prices that were not previously available.
